BIRDS
This gallery is dedicated to birds of all sorts other than those in flight (which have their own home). Birds have always fascinated me with their endless colour variations, habits, defences and hunting methods.
I have a particular love of raptors having watched the re-introduction of the Red Kite to mainland Britain from their final refuge in Wales. The tiny surviving colony of only 10 pairs near Rhayader in mid-Wales, protected for years by dedicated enthusiasts and even the military, was augmented with introduced birds from Scandinavia and thrived. New introductions were made on the Getty estate near Radnage in Buckinghamshire and then in other UK locations. They now begin to thrive and the sky is filled with their beauty. Sadly the UK success is not reflected in mainland Europe where Spanish and French colonies are in severe decline.
Birds are the barometer of our environment and are frequently the victims of misinformation. They are poisoned both deliberately and accidentally in vast numbers, they are shot indiscriminately, yet for millions they continue to delight. If you love birds please give support to your national bird protection organisations.
